Happy Memorial Day to all. While it’s a “3 Day weekend for most”, we have to remember what Memorial Day is all about. It is a day to memorialize our loved ones who have left us, but a lot of us take time to acknowledge and remember our Veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
We had a small group. Sparky and I met up with Papa “G”, Marc, Steve L., Dandy, Mark, and Calvin. Guest riders, Jim and Francis joined another new islander Joe to enjoy our day with us. Marc and Gordon took care of our safety.
We hit the roads and headed off to Waikiki. Traffic was a bit heavy but it was a beautiful day. We took our time, going through all the back roads cruising through Aina Haina and Hawaii Kai. We enjoyed the views and comradery as we slowly headed to Waimanalo and some break time. After talking story, grabbing some refreshments, we mapped out the next leg of the ride. It’s decided that we will head towards Kaneohe.
We took in the sights and took it slow and easy as the tourists were out and about for the big weekend. A lot of traffic around the cemetaries but that was to be expected. We made our way to Papa Ole’s for a great lunch. Everyone else must have had the same idea because the line was out the door. But the food was good and we got our nourishment and some serious visit time. After lunch everyone headed out to family things with several making plans to meet back up for the ceremonies at Punchbowl.
4:00 came and several bikers hit the streets to honor the fallen. Sparky and I greeted Jim, Francis, Marc, Kimo and Stacy and our vet, Don Lee. We exchanged pleasantries with several of our friends with other clubs as we staged to ride up to Punchbowl.
It was a moving ceremony and we thank everyone who came out for all veterans including our own members who fought for our freedom as well. Even the young ones took time from their day to wave a flag and show their thanks. I want to thank all our veterans for all that they still do.
I look forward to seeing everyone next week. Kimo takes the reins as I have my monthly SBU meeting but I will catch up. Be safe and ride with care.
